The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has ordered the Federal Government to register the National Association of Non-Teaching Staff of Nigerian Universities (NANTS) as a trade union.
Justice Osatohanmwen Obaseki-Osaghae ruled that the refusal to register NANTS was wrongful and directed the government to immediately issue the union its certificate of registration.
The court also restrained the Federal Government and its agents from preventing NANTS’ registration under the Trade Unions Act.
NANTS had approached the court seeking recognition as a trade union after its registration application was denied.
The new union was formed by university workers who left the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and now has branches in federal and state universities nationwide.
